Expensify's individual plan includes unlimited SmartScans, which is remarkable and worth saying plainly: for pure scan volume at zero cost, it's the strongest free offer among the dedicated tools. The trade-off is that Expensify is an expense-management platform — approval workflows, corporate cards, travel — and the interface carries that weight even when you just want a receipt in a spreadsheet.

Zoho Expense — small free tier inside a big platform
Zoho Expense's free tier covers a few users and a modest number of auto-scans per month, and it's a fair pick if you're already in the Zoho ecosystem. Like Expensify, it's enterprise software at heart — expect setup, policies, and concepts you may not need.
Fit: teams already using Zoho products.
Apple Notes / Google Drive — free scanning, no data
The document scanner built into your phone does edge detection and produces clean, searchable PDFs at zero cost. What it doesn't do is extraction: no fields, no categories, no totals — a tidier shoebox, not a tracker. We wrote up when that's enough and when it isn't.
Fit: receipts you're keeping "just in case" — warranties, returns — where nobody will ever need a sum.
Microsoft Lens — free scanning for the Office crowd
Lens is a capable free scanner app that shines if your world is OneDrive and OneNote. Same fundamental limit as Notes and Drive: images and OCR'd text, not structured expense data.
Fit: Microsoft-ecosystem users who need images, not spreadsheets.
The small dedicated apps (Foreceipt, ReceiptsAI, and friends)
There's a long tail of focused receipt apps with free tiers — commonly 20–30 documents a month. Quality varies more than in the big names, and small-app free tiers have a habit of shrinking after a pricing rework, so check the current terms before committing your workflow. That warning applies to everyone on this list, us included — which is why whatever you choose, make sure your data exports freely.
How to choose in 30 seconds

- You have huge volume and patience for a big app → Expensify's individual plan.
- You just want to keep images → the scanner already on your phone, free forever.
- You're a team inside Zoho/Microsoft → stay in your ecosystem.
